About Prime Minister Research Fellowship 2022

The Government of India has launched the Prime Minister Research Fellowship Scheme in order to improve the quality of research in various higher educational institutions in the country. Through this scheme, attractive fellowships are offered to the research fellows in order to attract the best talent into research.

The government has announced this scheme in the budget of 2018-19. Students from IIT, IISCRs, the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, and some of the top central universities/NITs that offer science or technology degrees will be covered under this scheme. The performance of the selected students under this scheme will be reviewed through a national convention.

Objective Of Prime Minister Research Fellowship

The main objective of the Prime Minister Research Fellowship is to provide financial assistance to Ph.D. scholars so that they can carry out their research in an effective and efficient manner. This financial assistance will be provided by the government of India. This scheme will motivate students to pursue their careers in research. Only those students who want to pursue their research in science or technology can be able to get the benefit from the Prime Minister’s research fellowship scheme.

Apart from this scholarship, each fellow will get a research grant of Rs 2 lakh per year for five years. The fellow will get a total research grant of Rs 10 lakh in five years. The tenure of the scholarship will be till the end of the fourth year of Ph.D. for students from integrated courses and till the end of the fifth year of Ph.D. for BTech or equivalent.

For students who are selected through lateral entry channels, the scholarship will continue till the student’s stay in the doctoral program. There will be no retrospective payment. Through CSR funding the industry participation in the PMRF program will be explored in order to enable the industry to sponsor fellows.

Deliverables Under Prime Minister Research Fellowship

  • Each fellow will get deliverables at the time of joining which are required to be achieved every year
  • These deliverables will be assigned by the guide and the department which the fellow is joining
  • Keeping in view the topic selected by the fellow the deliverables will be designed
  • Every year there should be an annual review of PMRF fellow
  • If the review committee has found the performance of the fellow satisfactory then the fellowship will continue in the next year

Amendments Under Prime Minister Research Fellowship Scheme

  • Under the Prime Minister research fellowship the students from any university can apply. Previously only students from certain selected institutes can apply
  • Previously the GATE score was 750 which is now reduced to 600
  • As for the new guidelines, there will be two channels of entry that is the direct entry and lateral entry
  • Under lateral entry, the students who are pursuing Ph.D. from PMRF granting institutions and have completed at least 12 months or 24 months according to the requirement can also apply to become fellow under the Prime Minister research fellowship scheme
  • All those National Institute of technologies that appear in the top 25 institutions in the ranking of National Institute ranking framework can also become Prime Minister research fellowship granting institutions

Eligibility Criteria For Prime Minister Research Fellowship Scheme

Direct Entry Channel

  • The applicant must be pursuing the final year of 4-5 year undergraduate for 5-year integrated M.tech or 2-year MSc or five-year undergraduate or postgraduate dual degree program in Science and technology stream from IISC/IIT/NITs/IISERS/IIEST and centrally funded IIIT. The Eligible candidate must have secured a CGPA or CPI of at least 8.0 on a 10-point scale. All those candidates who are in 5-year integrated dual degree programs if they are provided separate CGPA for UG and PG parts of the program then the CGPA of the UG part for the first four years will be considered

OR

  • The candidate must have completed pursuing the final year of 4 or 5-year undergraduate or 5-year integrated MTech or 5-year integrated MSc or 2-year integrated MSc or five-year undergraduate or postgraduate dual degree program in Science and technology stream from any other university or Institute recognized in India. The candidate must have secured a minimum CGPA of 8 or equivalent apart from a minimum score of 650 in the respective gate subject

OR

  • Candidate must have qualified gate or be pursuing or have completed Mtech/MS by research at one of the grating institution having a minimum CGPA for CPI of 8.0 at the end of 1st semester with the minimum of four courses. For those candidates who are applying after the first semester, the CGPA or CPI requirement of 8.0 will be based on all the courses, labs, and thesis that the candidate has completed
  • They should apply for the Ph.D. program in 1 of the PMRF granting Institute and get selected in the program
  • The institute which has admitted the student in the Ph.D. program should make a strong recommendation and upload the relevant information to the web portal. Students can get direct admission in those institutes where he or she has got selected and wishes to seek admission
  • The metrics on which the candidate will be judged will include research exposure, publication, performance in the international competitions, grades, and recommendation letter
  • Within 12 to 18 months of the admission into the Ph.D. program, the progress of the candidate will be reviewed by the panel and continuation of the fellowship will be subject to the candidate’s satisfactory performance
  • The candidate is required to submit a strong research proposal

Lateral Entry Channel

  • The candidate should be pursuing a Ph.D. program in the PMRF granting institution
  • He or she should have completed at least 12 months in the Ph.D. program if he or she has joined the Ph.D. program after the master’s degree and should have completed at least 24 months in the Ph.D. program if he or she has joined the Ph.D. program after the bachelor’s degree
  • The period will be counted from the date of admission to the Ph.D. program till the date of application for lateral entry
  • Each candidate will be considered at least twice through the lateral entry channel
  • If the course is integrated MTECH, MSc, and Ph.D. then the candidate will be eligible to apply within 12 months of the date of satisfying the master’s degree requirement
  • Candidate must have completed at least four courses in the Ph.D. program and obtained at least 8.5 CGPA or higher
  • The institute in which the student is enrolled should make a strong recommendation for the candidate and upload all the relevant information on the web portal which also includes research proposals in soft copies of publications
  • Transfer to another Institute is not allowed
  • The candidate cannot be considered for the Direct entry channel in the subsequent year
  • The metrics on which the candidate will be judged should include a strong research proposal, publication, records and grades.

Procedure To Apply Under Prime Minister Research Fellowship Scheme

  • The candidate is required to apply for the regular Ph.D. program in the PMRF granting institution
  • If you are selected and your candidature is found from the north and the institute will nominate you
  • You must have been selected for the Ph.D. program at the beginning of the current semester
  • If you were selected for the Ph.D. program earlier then you can only be considered in the lateral entry mode
  • The nomination does not guarantee and acceptance of the fellowship
  • After the nomination, the expert panel will look at the nomination and will make decisions
  • There is no central portal through which you can apply for Direct Entry
  • You have to go through one of the institutes and get admission to their Ph.D. program in order to get the benefit of this scheme
  • Once the committee receives your nomination then you will receive a link to submit your application
  • You will also be asked to submit your academic background along with transcripts, details of research experience or internship, CV, research proposal or statement of purpose, list of publications and references
  • There will be no reservation quota under the scheme
  • The deadline for receiving a nomination from the institute is 15th January 2022.
